BRITISH DRIFT CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 ROUND 1 AT TEESSIDE AUTODROME
The British Drift Championship is the biggest drifting competition in the UK attracting an astounding amount of drivers. This season is no different, with a total of 110 cars entered in the first round of the competition. Drivers came from all over Britain, some even from Europe.
My day started at 5:30am as Gogzy from Trampdrift came to pick me up to head down to Teesside. Considering I’d got home at 2am that morning, it was safe to say I was pretty tired. I picked up my camera equipment and bungled myself into Gogzy’s car. The aim was to get down there by 9am for the start of the practice session.
On arrival, thanks to the SXOC, I received my pit pass which was an amazing deal. Having access to the pits allowed me to interact and talk to different drivers as well as ogle at the cars. It’s clear to see that everyone has stepped it up a notch in their car preparations this season.
Walking through the pits, you can see all the updates to the cars that competed last year, as well as some all new machinery. After speaking to a few of the regulars, I quickly found that the level of drifting has gone up a notch as well. Qualifying was done on Saturday with ever changing conditions, at one point there was hail and bright sun the next. This resulted in a very interesting day with drivers constantly trying to figure out the grip level of the tarmac. The likes of Stephen Biagioni (Baggsy) with his RWD Subaru Impreza and Shane Lynch (of Boyzone fame) surprisingly not qualifying for the top 16; it really does show how competitive BDC is now.
Along with the new cars there seems to be a rise in new sponsorships too. The likes of Cannabis Energy Drink and Voltz Energy Drink have started sponsoring this season.
Not that it’s a bad thing, even Team Japspeed is now sponsored by Monster Energy Drinks and Quaife with their sequential gearbox.
Practise got under way for drivers that didn’t qualify for the top 16. These drivers were only allowed two runs each. Being their local track of course the Team Sunset lot were there. This time with Matty Stevenson at the wheel of his BMW V8 converted Nissan Silvia PS13 who qualified fourth.

7eam Chizfab also in attendance but they had problems during qualifying and didn’t reach the top 16.
Along with not qualifying, the only thing that Kyle didn’t weld on his Chizcab was the only thing that stopped working. The diff gave in and called an end to the practise for Kyle.
As you would expect during the practise there were some mishaps. Jay White from Team MnM had a bit of a scare. Luckily it was only cosmetics and exhaust damage.
Stuart “Scoobystu” Egdell from a new drift team, Team Redmist had an even more spectacular crash though:
Again the tyres did their job and the damage wasn’t anything too drastic.
After the mornings practise it was time for the finals and with the top 16 of each class lined up on the track, the spectators were invited down to check out the cars and speak to the drivers. They were also giving out freebies too. I managed to nab a digital tyre pressure gauge and tyre tread depth ruler; both pretty useful in my books!
